Eosinopenia as a marker of infection in patients with sickle cell anaemia: A preliminary report
نویسنده
چکیده
Neutrophilia is a useful marker of infection in many clinical settings but it is of limited value in SCA patients in whom neutrophilia with left shift is common even in steady state in the absence of infection. We hypothesize that eosinopenia may be a more reliable marker of infection in SCA patients. Retrospective analysis of the neutrophil and eosinophil counts of SCA patients in steady state with microbiologically confirmed infections in comparison to that of SCA patients without infection was conducted. The sensitivity and specificity of neutrophilia and eosinopenia as markers of infection in SCA patients were determined and compared. Neutrophilia and eosinopenia had similar sensitivity values of 100%. However, eosinopenia had a specificity of 93.3% that was significantly higher than the specificity of 80% for neutrophilia (p<0.05). Therefore, eosinopenia has the potential of being a more reliable marker of infection in SCA. However, there is the need to establish the significance of this preliminary report by larger multi-centre studies.

Antioxidant Enzymes and Acute Phase Proteins Correlate with Marker of Lipid Peroxide in Adult Nigerian Sickle Cell Disease Patients
Objective(s) Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder characterized by chronic haemolytic anaemia. Haemoglobin S containing red blood cells may be susceptible to oxidative stress due to imbalance between production of reactive oxygen species and the countering effect of the various antioxidants present in the body. Materials and Methods We evaluated some antioxidant enzymes which include gl...
متن کاملHematological Indices of Sickle Cell Anaemia Patients with Pulmonary Tuberculosis in Northern Nigeria.
Nigeria has the fourth highest prevalence of TB and the highest prevalence of Sickle cell anaemia (SCA) in the world. SCA patients have impaired immunity and are vulnerable to TB. Hence, we studied the haematological indices of SCA patients with TB in Nigeria. A total of 23 SCA patients with TB were studied in parallel with equal number of age and sex matched SCA patients without TB. SCA patien...
متن کاملAva II Site as a Marker of β-Globin Gene Polymorphism, among Normal and Sickle Cell Patients in Iran
The restriction enzyme Ava II detects the base change of the intervening sequence II (IVS II) which is used as one of the markers of β-globin gene polymorphism. This study was conducted to determine the frequency of the Ava II site on the β-globin gene among normal people and patients with sickle cell syndrome (SCS) in Iran. DNA fragments containing the IVS II region of the β-globin gene from...

Background: The aim of the present study was application of haemoglobin absorption spectroscopy as a distinguishing tool for identification of two haemoglobin types-HbA and HbS. Material and Methods: Millimolar absorptivities of normal adult haemoglobin (HbA) and sickle cell haemoglobin (HbS) were monitored at pH values of 7.2 and 5.0, within the ultra violet and visible spectral range (250-...
